There is no one shape or silhouette that is better than any other. In fact, we often want what we don’t have don’t we? Clients with curvy figures often tell me that the idea of a straighter figure is appealing and vice versa. Those of us with straight hair like the idea of natural curly hair and again vice versa. Someone with a full bust likes the idea of a smaller bust and so it goes on!
So this post is for you if you are someone who likes the idea of creating extra shaping at your waist:
1. Choose jackets/waistcoats that have waist shaping details like seams/darts
Jackets like this one that are tailored at the waist will create extra curvature.
They’ll shape nicely around those that have an indented waist but will equally visually add curves if you are less curvy naturally and like this look.
Shaped waistcoats will do likewise too if you want a lighter layer.
2. Look for ruching details at the waist area
Ruching just under the bust or at the waistline visually creates shaping in this area.
You’ll often find ruching like this in tops, dresses and swimwear.
3. Add a belt under a longer layer like a cardigan
This gives the suggestion of a waist without needing to show the waist.
As in the image, choosing a belt in a different colour to your top/trousers creates a point of interest.
4. Tie belts behind
This is a great little trick, particularly for coats and dresses. Rather than tie the belt at the front, instead create a tie at the back.
This pulls the belt loops either side which often creates an ‘indent’ and so appears to add shape.
(It’s particularly good if you don’t want to add extra bulk over the tummy area too).
5. Wide hemlines
Dresses and skirts that are wider at the hemline than waistline (like fit and flare style dresses, A line skirts etc) visually make the waist look comparably narrower and hence add shaping to the overall silhouette.
Let me know if you’ve tried any of the above and what works well for you. It’s always great to hear your ideas.
