I can’t believe that January has been and gone and here we are in February already! So how are you doing with those New Years Resolutions? It’s easy to let them slip I know, but some things can be life changing and so are worth keeping a real focus upon. One of your goals this year may be to take a step up the career ladder, so with that in mind I wanted to share some research that could make that all important difference to you.
Harvey Coleman’s book “Empowering Yourself, The Organizational Game Revealed”, cites three factors that are key to career success. He calls his model ‘PIE’ – an acronym for the three factors: Performance, Image and Exposure. According to his research, 30% of your business career success is based upon your personal image and in fact only 10% is due to your performance. So the way that you look and your visibility (exposure) are really important at work.
Further statistics in this month’s edition of Psychologies magazine suggest that 76% of HR Directors believe that an employees style of dress at work influences their chance of promotion**. So, whether you see it as an ‘inconvenient truth’ or truly embrace it, make sure that you use your personal image to your advantage.
If you’d like any help thinking through your image and how it can help you make that next step up the career ladder, just get in touch.
